Evaluation

I think on the whole my video is alright. I think I managed to come up with a pretty good concept considering I didn't have any idea what to do for it and was reluctant to take inspiration with a lot of the kinds of videos we'd seen as I really didn't want to make it cheesy. I like the idea of having the shot of me taking a picture, but I think maybe it would have been better if I could've gotten a better shutter noise to dub over the top, as I didn't want to use the one in iMovie as I thought that sounded very fake, which it was. I wish that I had more time to come to grips with the software as I think I could've made the video flow better, I also wish I had a better quality of video (I used a Nikon D5100) and I think, even when I had the video in iMovie, that the quality wasn't what I expected, but that could've been me, as I didn't really know how to use the camera. I also found that when I exported the video it reduced the quality of my pictures quite a lot which was again not expecting as I had it as a large file, which was quite disappointing. I think that if I did this again I wouldn't change my idea I don't think, because I was quite pleased with it, but I would, however, make sure I understand the programme I'm using because I made a lot of mistakes because I was more or less making it up as I went along. I would also make more effort to get a better quality camera because after looking at some other peoples videos, I thought mine could've looked better, a little more professional. I chose the music, Bad Day by REM, because I think it's a really good song, but also I think that it's saying alot about what I think of photography, as in, it's saying about how it can be very intrusive, and it can very depressing (from a news and press view). Overall, I think I did quite well with coming up with an idea which I could use over the years, because I could change the pictures as my work develops and perhaps it would become more focused on one type of photography (press/nature or something). I could also change the videos of me with the different projects and keep the video structure in tact.

Right so, storyboard

I'd start off with a clip of me taking a picture -

Then it'll be a selection of pictures -

It would then go into another clip of me taking a picture, with different clothes and the camera set up to mimic how I had it for the pictures which will follow.








I think I will also have black screens with the titles of the projects on, purely to bulk out the video and to try and match it with the music, which I have gotten so it fits on a minute.

Some more

This is the kind of thing which I want to bring in my pictures, probably very similar, except I'll change my clothes everytime to try and match what I was wearing when I took the photos. I think I'll also change the camera and lens' I was using for the picture (such as 50mm and macro). This is just show my variety, which is what I really want to push with this, as I feel I don't really have a dedicated style or subject matter (unless you count birds and animals but I don't think I really want to go that way with this). Obviously it'll be edited down to just the one shutter, though maybe having lots for multiple stuff, though that probably would work because they're all pretty different pictures and that would suggest some continuity with the images.

Right then...

I want to have like a shot of my face or my camera or something to represent me and then a photograph I took, but I think I would have the representation of me change with the different pictures, so to show variety and make the video a bit more interesting than if I had the same thing.

I don't know if I would have just one picture or a selection after each, because it could be a bit messy if you start having loads of different shots and different representations, and I want it to have some structure. I think the way to mash it up too 1 minutes would be to have groups of 3 or 4 pictures from the same project or as part of the same 'heading'.

Who do I think my target audience is? I guess it's anybody at the moment, I'm just looking for employment right now. Obviously I would prefer something to do with press but I don't really have a lot too show that has a photojournalism slant, only my student demo stuff and the few bits I have from my work experience. I'm not sure who I want to put my video to, I would probably have it as an opener to my website, when I make a professional one, so it would be just to show visitors to my website to show what different work I do. I think if I carried this on, I would obviously have to get permission for the song, I would also make it longer so it doesn't start so abruptly, and as my work develops, I would change the pictures to keep up with my work.

Spots vs stripes fish battle

I think these adverts really work for Cadbury, even though it doesn't really say anything about the product, but because it shows alot of personality and isn't openly trying to sell anything, which I think people appreciate that once in a while. I think it's important to get across personality because then people can identify with it more, and don't find it so intimidating. In these adverts you see the fun but also the dedication in them, because people have obviously thought alot about them and had fun making them.

The opening credits from Se7en. I think this does a really good job in setting the tone of the whole film, it makes it very creepy and sinister. I also think it shows how editing can be used to great effect as it only uses short clips of things the guy is doing (such as writing and sewing the pages of the books and developing pictures), and it interjects them with single frames of things like pictures and pages and stuff, which I think creates a very uneasy feeling in the video as a whole as your not entirely sure what your seeing, you just know it's horrible.

This is tv spot for the channel premier of the film Watchmen on channel 4 in the summer. I just remembered it as I really liked the song, which shows the power the soundtrack can have on a video. I felt that it made the film have a really tragic feel, it made it feel very melancholic and generally a bit odd (which is what the film is like really).

Advert for the Honda Accord which has all the parts make a chain which showcases the car, basically saying that it all works together as as well as showing off a few bits (like the windscreen wipers which work automatically when water gets on the windscreen). I think it just shows how a simply shot video can keep a person watching with the right amount of tension. It's also very memorable. But all Honda adverts are great (except the choir one, that was their worst)

Ideas...

Currently, no ideas. I do, however, know I want somethings particularly; A selection of photos (not just one project) as I think this will show diversity and I don't want to show myself as a documentary photographer in particular, I don't want my face (because I don't come off well in photographs or anything like that), I want to try and make it as cheese-less as possible.
